About this site

when fleeting moments, find permanence ™”

Welcome to Proteus Photography. This collection is when I have a brief opportunity to show a snippet of what has been a truely enjoyable activity for me—curating a sliver of God’s creations and then sharing everything, as widely as possible.

I started this hobby from about 2019-ish (give or take a few thousand accidental photos of lens caps.) I now imagine a place where you can be free to immerse in the beauty of our world, one photograph at a time. My photos are organised to deliver an inclusive experience through digital galleries, designed for you to browse, explore, and admire the collection of moments I've been fortunate enough to capture. My hope is that you'll take your time here, letting the images speak to you and finding your own connection to the stories they tell.

The techniques used for my hobby photographs are different, as everything is supported by a unique approach (do visit my blog). So whether you're looking for mother nature’s captivating snaps, your own portraits, last weekend’s basketball game, or life’s treasured moments; feel at ease to journey through this site. Take your time to wander through and I hope you have a most enjoyable experience, as many others have. And, please do let me know what you think…

Why the name Proteus? Well, the name Proteus on this site embodies the versatile, mutable, and multi-form, God-created nature of the world that I strive to capture. Proteus Photography evokes a rich tapestry of imagery, dynamic movement, and raw emotion. It's also a playful pseudonym that reflects my deep love for exploring the ever-changing wonders of our planet. Plus, it sounds a little more learned, which helps when I’m covered in mud waiting for a bird to look at me. Just a small taste of nature's infinite diversity.

Why Wildlife Photos? I am constantly seeking to capture and share the extraordinary moments that reveal our shared connection with nature. It is a mix of contemplation, introspection that is captured in a snapshot that freezes time. It is also a mix of me standing incredibly still, pretending to be a tree, hoping the wildlife doesn't notice I'm completely out of my element. And, like the people, plants, and animals we interact with, we can then enjoy and be part of this incredible story.

Art and Mathematics: It might sound like two different worlds, but the beauty captured through my camera and lens is deeply rooted in mathematics. It's not just the idea that art is purely subjective; an exciting field called Computational Aesthetics is proving that the principles of beauty can be measured and meticulously quantified.

Explore & Own a Piece of Nature, Life (& Time) My “art” and photographs are available for you to enjoy anytime, anywhere. Imagine bringing the beauty of the wild into your home or onto your favorite items. If you’re interested in owning some of these high-resolution images—whether you envision a keepsake photo, a stunning print for your wall, a personalized calendar, a unique coffee mug, a comfortable t-shirt, or something else entirely (within the laws of physics and printing) — let me know how I can help.

How do I explore more? Simply contact me if you have questions. I host regular talks about my hobby photos, and would be very happy to have one with you. So, please let me know if you wish to have an informal chat, a formal presentation, or simply a Question/Answer session.

Looking forward to connecting and sharing the amazing beauty of our world.

Warmest wishes, Ian
