This striking Amanita muscaria exemplifies the unique kingdom of fungi—rooting like a plant but genetically closer to an animal with its chitin-rich cell walls.

chitin—the exact same tough material found in the exoskeletons of crabs, insects, and lobsters

Fungi & Mushrooms exist in a kingdom entirely their own.

They require no light to thrive, instead spending their lives beneath the surface as an intricate network of mycelium, rising briefly only to sculpt the forest floor with these fleeting, delicate forms.

Nature literally painted this one bright red and covered it in warning bumps just to say: "I am beautiful, I am ancient, and I will absolutely ruin your week if you try to eat me."

Fungi grow from the earth, yet don’t use sunlight.

Fungi share the structural blueprint with insects, yet it stay rooted in place.

Mushrooms are Fungi, & belong to this brilliant, independent kingdom of their own - they aren't plants, and they aren't animals; they are nature’s ultimate recyclers, quietly transforming the forest floor right under our feet.

The fungi below is star-shaped; and is known as the barometer earthstar (astraeus hygrometricus) - it has a "barometer" mechanism that is highly sensitive to humidity. During wet or rainy weather, the woody outer rays absorb water and peel outward to expose the central spore sac. When conditions dry up, the rays curl tightly back around the sac to protect it.
