Don't let the 'pretty rainbow' aesthetic fool you. Deep down, I am a dinosaur. 🦖 My ancestors took down Triceratops, and here I am, being forced to look 'dainty'

The Evolution of the Name, Rosella

Rose Hill Parakeet: Early European settlers first spotted the Eastern Rosella in Rose Hill, a suburb of Sydney (now known as Parramatta).

Rose Hillers: In typical fashion, the name was quickly shortened by locals to "Rose Hillers".

Rosella: Over time, "Rose Hiller" was corrupted and smoothed out into the word "Rosella". By the 1920s, this became the officially accepted name for the whole group of parrots.

… she illustrates a key evolutionary strategy… transforming from a camouflaged olive-green juvenile into the iconic crimson and blue adult to balance youthful survival with mature breeding displays

While the adult is famed for its brilliant crimson body and vivid blue cheeks and flight feathers, juvenile rosellas are almost entirely a muted olive green, a crucial camouflage that protects them from predators as they mature.
