eastern rosella (platycercus eximius)
The Evolution of the Name, Rosella
Rose Hill Parakeet: Early European settlers first spotted the Eastern Rosella in Rose Hill, a suburb of Sydney (now known as Parramatta).
Rose Hillers: In typical fashion, the name was quickly shortened by locals to "Rose Hillers".
Rosella: Over time, "Rose Hiller" was corrupted and smoothed out into the word "Rosella". By the 1920s, this became the officially accepted name for the whole group of parrots.
